This template suits informative and general-purpose speeches of three to ten minutes. It uses signposting and repetition because listeners cannot reread.
Template structure
Opening
A story, question, or striking fact. Do not start with an apology.
Purpose and preview
One sentence on your topic and the three points you will cover.
Point 1
Claim, story or example, and a one-line takeaway.
Transition
A sentence that closes point 1 and opens point 2.
Point 2
Claim, story or example, and a one-line takeaway.
Point 3
Your strongest point, closest to the close.
Close
Echo the opening and leave one idea or action.
